16. William Harvey SORRELLS Sr.

He is listed in the Hannah's Gap Church Records.

He died at age of 82 years.

The family states that He said, "I came from NC to TN @ age 8 years." ( He did not come from NC at this time, because they were in Obion Co., TN prior to coming to Middle TN.) Perhaps this is what he remembered.

He was wounded in the Battle of Murfreesboro 31 Dec 1862. He served as a Private in Company C 8th Infantry (Confederacy). Enlisted 15 Sep 1862 in Lincoln Co., TN. Served in Captain William D. Bond's Company.

The cemetery is actually in Marshall Co., TN turn right off the road way back in a cow pasture. He has a very nice headstone purchased by his 2nd wife, Bettie.

17. Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" SCOTT

Birth Information from the 1850 Census, Lincoln Co., TN lists 1844 as birth year. Information from Mary SCOTT lists the 1848 year of birth and in the family birth order this seems reasonable.

She made lye soap one day and died in her sleep that night.

Death Information from the Records of Hannah's Gap Baptist Church membership records Lincoln Co., TN also listed as death in Apr 1898 in another entry In Hannah's Gap records.

22. Pleasant Henderson FREEMAN

I have a wonderful picture of the old homeplace that is touched with color. It was taken before the place burned. The place was on the left near the Freeman-Reese Cemetery on the Bledsoe Road in PoGrab going toward Chestnut Ridge. None of the out buildings or the orchard are still there.

He is listed on the 1880 Lincoln Co., TN Census. Harvey is listed as a step-son-therefore Nancy must have been the one giving out the information.

23. Nancy Catherine REESE

She was thought to have died of Tuberculosis.

I have a photo of her sitting in front of the Spring House on their homeplace. William Roy, her grandson is sitting in her lap.

Listed as Nannie J. in the 1880 Lincoln Co., TN Census.

24. HODGE

This is a possible name for John's father. His mother retained the name of Ingle. The family notes indicate that a HODGE/HODGES was the father of Sarah's children.

I have the 1860 Census of Sevier Co., TN District 7, Boyd's Creek Post Office:
William HODGES age 20 Farmer, b TN living with parents
Edward and Mary HODGES that is definitely the age and in the proximity to have fathered the children of Sarah.

Or: 471 District 9
Henry HODGE 42 Farmer 1600 1350
Mariah HODGE 46 Tennessee
Edmond 19 Farmer

25. Sarah INGLE

Sarah was born between 1832-1840 and I find no record of a marriage in Sevier Co. According to family legend Sarah was never married, but had 3 children. She is listed in the 1850, 1860 and 1880 Sevier Co., TN with her parents.

In 1850 Cocke Co., TN Census she is listed as age 11, b
1860 Sevier Co., TN Census she is listed as age 20, b NC
1870 Census-Whereabouts unknown. She is not living with her parents.
In 1880 Sevier Co., TN, b SC, she is listed as 43 and living with her parents,
1900 Census at age 67.

This is the mother of John Ingle. I have been unable to find conclusive dates. She is still living at age 67 according to the 1900 Sevier Co., TN Census and listed as unmarried. She is living with a niece, Hannah, and her husband Cornelius Hedrick. Hannah's father was William INGLE a brother to this Sarah. There are no other Sarah's in Sevier Co., TN at this time period, therefore I conclude that this is my Sarah, especially because she is still unmarried in 1900. The family history says that she lived to see her grandchildren.

Sarah's nieces, daughters of William, Sallie and Celia, both married TEAGUE brothers as my John INGLE married their sister. These close connections add to the evidence that this is my Sarah.

Her death date is from the Bible of William INGLE, her brother.

It was recorded by a Belle INGLE Sufferidge that she never married the HODGE that fathered her three children: Kate, Joe, and Rube and that Kate married a JUSTUS.

In the Sevier County Court Minutes [Pg569] On 02 Jul 1860 State of TN vs Henry McMott for Bastardy Bond regarding: Sarah INGLE, mother of a bastard child, named Mary, by Henry McMOTT (Wm. H. McMott) . He was ordered to pay support.

Henry McMOTT on 14 Oct 1861 was ordered to pay for the second years support of the child Mary. Sevier County Court Minutes [Pg727] This child is likely our Mary INGLE who married the Texan.

26. Wallace ALEXANDER TEAGUE

The following information from TEAGUE, TX family history at B-RI Railroad & Historical Museum.

"Wallace Joshua Teague (ALEXANDER)
(c1822-1871) He was born Wallace Alexander: changed his and his children's surname to his step-father's name: TEAGUE. Wallace's father was abusive and brutal, while his step-father was more of a father than his natural father. It has been said : "Martha DEAN married Wallace Alexander and had children: William Marion, James Albert, and Jackson". Wallace changed his name to Wallace Teague.

Born c1822, SC; died after Oct 1871, TN. Married 1st Martha Dean, who was born c1825, SC and 2nd on June 10, 1858, Greene Co., TN to Mrs. Rebecca (DICKSON) CUTSHALL, who was born c 1835, NC; died Oct. 11, 1884, buried Zion Hill Cemetery, Sevier Co., TN; widow of John CUTSHALL, Jr; daughter of David and Elizabeth ( ) DICKSON. It is thought that perhaps the step-father's name was Joshua TEAGUE."

Another family story was that there were 2 brothers named Jack and Bill ALEXANDER. The ALEXANDER man and wife died, when these boys were young. They had no other relatives and were taken in and raised by a family by the name of TEAGUE. (These would be Wallace's oldest boys.)

From William H. Teague, son of James A. Alexander (or Teague). He said James had two brothers (no names). Their mother married a TEAGUE after ALEXANDER died and they moved from Spartenburg to Greeneville, Greene, Tennessee. The boys became known as "the Teague boys." James and his two brothers decided to keep and use the name of TEAGUE because the oldest brother said the Teague man had been better to them than their father.

My family information is that he was called "Joshua" or "Joshaway" TEAGUE, but court records list his given name as Wallace "TEAGUE". (Sherry S. Finchum) He possibly had a brother Joshua who was killed in the Civil War. This Joshua Tessaway TEAGUE was married to a Sopia DICKSON, sister to Rebecca!

The name is recorded in Belle INGLE SUFFRIDGE's records as: TIGUE.

He is found first in 1858 in Greene Co, TN with a marriage to Rebekah Cutshall, who was the wife of John Cutshall, Jr. before John evidently died in 1854.

The family is not clearly listed on the 1860 Census in TN, but could be:

*Newton Teague 17 living in Blount Co in 1870. I wonder if this is the same Newton who was 6 and enumerated with Wallace and Rebecca in 1860? Then I found a Samuel N. Teague married to Rebecca Delozier March 8, 1871 in Blount Co. I wonder if there is a connection there?

27. Rebecca DICKSON

According to family legend, her first husband, John Cutshall, Jr. was killed in a wrestling match or feud with supposedly a SHELTON family member. (David Whitehead was told this by a CUTSHAW person.)

She and new husband John are living with her parents in the 1850 Greene Co., TN Census.

I have located her in the 1880 Sevier County Census, living with her children.

28. John Bitner CLARK

He was named for a John BITNER who was born in Blount County, TN in 1816.

He and his twin brother, Robert Shields CLARK were very close. "It is said that if they met while plowing their adjacent farms that they would sit down and talk the rest of the day while the mules sought the shade. I have also been told that someone couldn't fight just one of them, it would have to be both!" (Fred Everitt CLARK)

He is listed on the 1850 Sevier Co., TN Census living beside his mother.

Can't find him on the 1860 Sevier Co., TN Census.

He is deceased before the 1870 Sevier Co., TN Census. His wife and 4 youngest children are listed.

1871 Sevier Co., TN Tax List: Clark, J.B. Heirs District 13

He and his wife are buried in a cowfield on the top of the hill behind a house on the back road to Gatlinburg near Murphy's Chapel United Methodist Church. There are just rocks to mark the graves.

I have a tin-type picture of the children. (Sherry S. Finchum)

30. Smith Ferguson "S. F." PAINE

His daughter, Mary, helped him to write a wonderful Memoir about the family history.

He served in Civil War 4 years was Orderly Sergeant of N.C. 64th regiment company C. He served in the Confederate Army going from his state, NC. He was ordained as a Baptist Minister in Madison Co., NC in 1875. He moved to TN in 1886.

1870 Madison Co., NC lists #393 family # 193:
McEntire, James S. age 66 farm laborer 150 150 NC Can't read or write-Marshall Post Office
Mary age 44, keeping house
Filetus 15, male at home
Sarrah 13, female at home
James S. 19, male farm laboring

with #433 and family #95 is:
Payn, Smith F. age 33 farm laborer 300 NC Spring Creek Post Office
, Mary E. age 23 keeping house
, Ambrose age 4
, Isaac N. age 2

The Alexander Co., NC Family History book records two accounts of Smith Ferguson's (his namesake) pastorial service. "Little River Baptist Church: In 1841, Smith Furguson was pastor and there were 111 members. In 1847 there was the greatest revival ever recorded in this area; 158 people were baptized. In 1849 the pastor, Smith Ferguson ordained nine ministers". Perhaps this was when our Smith Ferguson Paine was ordained! "Three Forks Baptist Church: Rev. Smith Ferguson served one year till 1861."

"Grandfather Smith Furgerson Paine was ordained to the Baptist ministry by Roaring Fork Baptist Church in NC, 9 Aug 1881, and later transferred his membership to Zion's Grove Baptist in Sevier County,TN 17 Dec 1904. He was pastor of several churches, and converted and baptized many people into the faith of his church.

Grandfather was a large man, over 6 feet in height, dark of completion and hair, a big-boned man weighing over 200 pounds. He was of Dutch Hollander and Swiss descent. There were four brothers-his great grandfather was one of them-who emigrated to America. They came to VA and scattered from there. His great Grandfather remaining. Grandfather loved his family and grandchildren. He liked to tease us and when we were small and to hold us on his lap."(Newton B. Clark)

I have several photographs of him. (Sherry S. Finchum)

I have a tin-type picture of this family. (SSF)

This PAINE cemetery is well kept. To reach it, beginning in Sevierville at the intersection of US 411 and State Route 66, drive toward Newport for 3.3 miles. Turn right onto Old US 411. Drive 0.6 miles, then bear right onto Pittman Center Road. Drive 9.2 miles and turn left. The cemetery is 0.1 miles ahead on the left.

31. Mary Emeline "Molly" MCINTIRE

"Grandmother PAINE operated the switchboard on Bird's Creek (named that for the large number of pigeons around). They would call & say I want to talk to someone, and she would plug them in. Our ring was 2 longs and 1 short. Grandmother would never let me listen in. When a storm would come up her mother would go outside and pull something so that the lightening would not come in on the lines." (Emma Deane CLARK)

"Grandmother, Mary Emeline McIntire Paine, was of Irish ancestory. She was a small woman, about 5 feet 1 or 2 inches in height, weighed around 100 pounds, was of fair complexion, which was even beautiful in her advanced years, blue eyed, and red hair. She was born in Buncombe County, NC and died in Sevier Co., TN. Grandmother was full of life and fun. She was an excellent singer, she usually sang soprano, but would sing alto equally as well. She had a beautiful voice. She liked to play games and tell tales, even tales of witchcraft, of which she knew many, some of them would make your hair stand up. She was inclined to be superstitious, and she knew several remedies there-for. She liked to have young people around her, and she loved and adored her grandchildren. Grandmother liked to visit, and when the urge struck her, she would simply harness whatever animal was available to the buggy and take off. It was a thrill to see her coming around the road towards home for a visit. The grandchildren were always welcome at Grandmother's and some of the happiest memories of my childhood are my visits to grandmother's. She always had cookies, jams or jellies available, and I never left Grandmother's empty handed. She always gave you something-an apple, pecans, a cuff link or collar button-but always something. She was of true nobility, she loved clothes, of which she had many, shoes, gloves, hats, and dresses. She loved silks and soft materials, and knew how to dress and wear them. Grandmother was what you would call a fancy dresser. She also had loads of jewelry. She loved colorful bedspreads, and could not resist an Irish peddler when he opened his pack.

Grandmother usually enjoyed good health, in the spring of 1920 she was visiting Mother, and while sitting by the fire kidding with Rev. George Houser, she suffered a stroke from which she never recovered. It took here speech. It was not the direct cause of her death, but was the contributing factor. In some manner she injured one of her arms and it got infected and blood poisoning set in." (Newton B. Clark)

I have other documents prepared by J B Waters Jr. that say that Mary's parents were Seb McIntyre and Mary Randles.

DEATH: Certificate State of TN #153 Sevier County, TN lists here father as Cebrm McIntire b in NC and mother as Mary Randles b NC. Cause of death listed as unknown; loss of mind for 18 months but no Doctor's report. Informant was A.M. Paine

I have a photograph of her carding wool. (Sherry S. Finchum)
