32. Thomas SORREL
This spelling for SORREL is based on the signatures of the children who could write their own names on the estate settlement of Thomas in 1870. Millia, from this generation spelled it: SORREL.
In the next generation the additional L was added to avoid confusion with other SORRELS in the same community. It had to do with confusion over mail or a business account.
I believe that Thomas and siblings are listed in their father's household as children in the 1810 Surry Co., NC Census and then father is in the 1820 Bedford Co., TN Census. Thomas' birthdate of 1793 is from the 1850 Census of Lincoln Co., TN. He is listed here as 17 years older than his wife. Some 1850 Lincoln Co., TN Census list him as 37 or 57 depending on the transcriber. This is the only reference we have to his birthyear.
Because his first child, Elizabeth is not born until 1827, I'm not convinced of a 1793 birthdate for my Thomas.
14 Oct 1831, Maury Co., TN a James Russell and Thomas Sowell are listed as purchasers on the estate of Stephen Edwards. Pg 400. (As I find Thomas SOWELL in Maury Co., TN it is hand-written consistently as SOWELL, and if he signs his name, it appears to be SOWELL, but hard to be for sure.)
There is also a Thomas SORRELLS in Henry Co., TN in 1830. Documents researched there also show that this Thomas signed his own name. Because my Thomas SORREL only signed with his mark, I am very doubtful this is my Thomas SORREL.)-Sherry S. Finchum
Perhaps Thomas and wife, Elizabeth RUSSELL went to Obion Co., TN to care for her father then stayed to settle his estate.

They are not included as charter members. (Minutes of the Republican Grove Baptist Church, Obion Co., TN 1838-1860, Pub. No. 279, Microfilm no. 198 at the Nashville, TN State Archive Library).
Jul 1839 He is listed as an administrator on the estate of James Russell in Obion Co., TN. Elizabeth's brother, T. P. C. Russell is co-administrator. On the estate sale, he again signs with his mark!

His gravesite had no markers, just rock piles. He and 2nd wife, Elizabeth "Becky" RUSSELL and a child (probably Thomas, Jr.) are listed to be buried 3 1/2 miles NE of Petersburg, TN near Bedford, Marshall, and Lincoln Co. lines on the Elige Williams Place or Casteel property. Called the Sorrells' Cemetery. Our family placed an engraved headstone for Thomas and Elizabeth in July 1998. The graves are on a hillside across a deep gully of the Hannah's Gap Road in Petersburg, TN (Po-Grab). The area is covered with cemetery vine. It is behind a house there and to the right. There are 3 graves there and they are marked with rocks.
A letter written by J. E. (James Edward) SORRELL to Mrs. Pettigrew in AR states that his father, Thomas had a brother named Edward.
I have a photograph of Thomas.
A letter from her brother, T. P. C. "Thomas" RUSSELL in Obion Co., TN dated 26 May 1858 to Thomas addressed as brother-in-law stated that they owed some of the estate of their father to a man named John SISCO who lived in Stoddard Co., MO. He came for his share of Father's estate."
Another letter dated 1 Oct 1859. Refers to a James (T.P.C.'s oldest child was named James) coming to visit them soon and should bring any news. He again asks them for money in regard to their settlement with John Sisco on their father's estate. Copies of these letters were received from John and Sherry SORRELLS from a trunk of papers that belonged to Jack SORRELLS in PoGrab, TN.
Copy of a receipt: Received of Thos Sorrels by Gabriel Young $12 in full of my account for coffin this Apr 1 1868. signed by R. C. Blackwall. I believe that this would have been for Elizabeth. All of the children from the 1850 Lincoln Co., TN Census were still alive, except for son Thomas, Jr.. He was never married in Lincoln Co., TN as were his siblings. He did not appear in any other Census records. In 1868 he would have been 32 years old, but never listed as a landowner or Head of Household, therefore I believe he died prior to this 1868 date, and the coffin was for Elizabeth. $12 would be for a full-sized coffin.
34. Samuel SCOTT
He is listed in the 1850 Lincoln Co., TN Census as a farmer, being born in KY.
Elizabeth's birthplace is listed as unknown.
The Hester Cemetery is two and one-half miles NE of Petersburg, TN in Wells Hollow. Turn left out of Petersburg onto Wells Hollow Road. Travel until you come to a populated area. Across from a broken down very old house on the left, there is an opening in the fence. You must unlatch the fence. The cemetery is extremely overgrown up the hill in the middle of the field under a clump of trees. Junior Wells is the owner of the land, and lives in the house to the right before you reach the area. This land is known as the SCOTT farm.

35. Elizabeth RYALLS
Her father is listed in the 1820 Lincoln Co., TN Census.
He and family are on the 1850 Lincoln Co., TN. He and Susan are listed both at age 39 (which should be 29). The ages are not correct according to the 1860 Census which lists them as being 38 and 38.

He may possibly have married a 2nd time to a Susan Bowden. The difference in the Susan's ages of the 1850/1860 and 1870 Census records would account for 2 different marriages, but there are continual errors.
There is conflicting census information as to the birth year of Susan. 1850 Census suggests 1811, but 1870 Census says 1832. I believe 1822 is correct-somewhere in between.

42. William Crittenden WAGSTER
He is listed in the Hannah's Gap Church Records with his death date recorded there.
He was wounded at the battle of Murfreesboro. Need to research further in Confederate veterans.
"He went to cut wood on a hill behind the house. Callie was the baby and had typhoid fever. His dog went with him. The dog came home alone. The family started looking for him and the dog led them to the place where he had died." (Vida Redd Sorrells)

44. Abner R. FREEMAN
From " John FREEMAN of Nolfolk Co., VA"- R. A. Freeman states that Abner was married 3 times and had 33 children. We know for sure of 4 marriages. The surnames of his wives were supposedly from a Mrs. Palmer. From Lincoln Co., TN Court records we have been able to piece together what is collected here. There is certainly room for correction and addition.
There is a death record in Bedford County (1834)? Someone said that one of the first wives names was Lurany.
Margy Sims told Grandmother(Vida Redd Sorrells) this is where the Indian blood comes into the Redd side of the family. She said that is was through the Freeman line. Cousin Charles MONK also confirms that his family always understood that Abner was Cherokee. Perhaps Nancy HAWKINS was Cherokee? Others say the REESE line. Patricia Linney states that she has always been told by her father that her great-great grandmother: Elizabeth Ann Freeman was full-blooded Cherokee.

Signed sealed and acknowledged in presence of us. James Melson, James Barham, John G. Glidewell.Thomas H. Bledsoe filed an inventory of Abner's estate with the court dated 7 Aug 1854.
Thomas H. Bledsoe, Administrator of Abner's will, vs. The widow and heirs of Abner Freeman, dated 28 Feb 1856, "This matter came on to be heard, and upon motion Charles A. Freeman is appointed guardian ad litern (friend of the court) for Moses, Achilles, James, Alexander, Mary A., Henderson, Martha A., and Altanta Freeman, children of Abner Freeman, and also of Abner and Mary Swinford-Lydia C., Eglentine, William, Perry G., Nancy R., & Mary F. Charles A. FREEMAN - was appointed guardian of the minor children of Abner:James, Alexander, Mary A., Henderson, Martha A, Atlanta (Who I believe to be Agnes).
Publication for or suppoenas served on the following with no response:
William FREEMAN -
Hannah, wife of William WESTERMAN -
Jane, wife of William MARTIN -
Catherine, wife of William CUNNINGHAM -
Sarah, wife of ____________ MOORE
Elizabeth, wife of William H GIBSON -
Samuel F. FREEMAN -
Daniel F. FREEMAN -NOTE: Charles A. FREEMAN was also appointed guardian of Abner and Mary SWINFORD (apparently grandchildren of Abner) and Abner's known grandchildren, (the children of Andrew Jackson FREEMAN and wife Martha A. (Polly) as A J FREEMAN had died 20 Dec 1845, and even though his widow, Polly, had married 8 May 1853 William Franklin MELSON): Lydia C., Eglentine, William, Perry C., Nancy R., and Mary F. FREEMAN.
Abner is buried at the top of a very high hill: Five miles NE of Petersburg, TN, west of Helton Hollow. This is accessed from Poor Grab Rd., crossing the fields and fences and climbing straight up the hill. Three graves there are marked with native fieldstones.
"When Abner Freeman died, Drucilla's brother-in-law, James Barham gave all his children: Charlie, Tom, and Ruth (Ruf) -parts of the farm, and left Drucilla with just a homestead". (Fanny Freeman Davidson) At the time the farm was called the "Freeman Branch", and then became known as the "Barham Branch".
Abner's estate records indicate that he evidently owed $2000+ and had enough cash to pay the debt down to $900+. One record indicates the court sent the county surveyor up to survey the farm and they were preparing to sell enough land to satisfy the debts. There are other documents but I ran out of time. In the tax records of 1851 he had 275 acres.
My records on his family groups are from Grandmother's records that came through: Mabel A. Tucker, Rt 2, Box 170-A, Fayetteville, TN (931) 433-5991

In my notes from conversations with my grandmother, Vida Redd Sorrells, she mentioned a Sarah J. Freeman who married William Owen Foster and went to TX. They were related to Ambrose Foster & Suzanne Medlin. (Perhaps these are their children.) Ambrose Foster from SC died in Lonesome Dove in Grapevine.
The land for the old cemetery at Mt. Hermon was sold by Abner of Lincoln Co., TN. According to early deeds, this appears to be a part of the old Higginbotham tract purchased by William Higginbotham in 1810 and 1811. On October 15, 1830, one acre of land was deeded to Isaac Bennett, Peterson Grammar, and Henry Dean and their successors in office as trustees of the Meeting House at Mt. Hermon. Included in this transaction was the meeting house and all improvements thereon. Witnesses were William C. FREEMAN and James FREEMAN.
She is listed in the 1860 Lincoln Co., TN Census. She has $1000 Real Estate and $450 Personal Property.

There are no INGLEs in the earlier Union Co., SC Census
There are other possiblities in 1840 of our John, but the Union County Census reflects the dates of his known children.
According to Cora Ingle Walker, they came to TN from NC driving their cattle over the Smoky Mountains.(Bits and Pieces of History about Smoky Mountain Foothills People: Ingle Families by Nora Harbin DeArmond 1990, Newsletter, Smoky Mountain Historical Society, Winter 1990, Vol XVI, No. 2, pg.98 Many photos of INGLE family. Large family group taken in 1910 of William INGLE family and friends.
According to family legend, this man married an Indian girl who had been abandoned and lived with them. (Marguerite Joyce Perdue Brown states that her mother and grandmother, Zora, told her of the Cherokee line being through her great, great grandfather.)
My grandfather, Fred Elmer INGLE, was supposedly one quarter Cherokee. (Sherry Sorrells Finchum)
Our John is listed in Cocke Co Census of 1850, place of birth for both he and Celia is SC. John is listed as age 36 which would make birthyear: 1814 and Celia is listed as age 29 birthyear: 1821.
There are no Cocke Co., TN Deeds available before Jun 1865. There is a Surveyor's Book for Aug 1865-1889. Tax Books do not begin until 1876.

Mary 4/12Several of the family members say he was from NC, but the Census records say SC. Family history is that he drove his cattle over the Smoky Mountains from NC. This is very likely true because the last SC record we have of the family is 1843. You must go through NC to get to TN where the family was in 1850!
Sevier Co., TN Court Records: 1865-14 7-19-1865 State Ingle, John Sale of Liquor
1870 Census of Sevier Co., TN, John listed as b in SC and Clia listed as SC again. John is listed here as age 71 which would indicate a birthyear of 1799. Clia is listed as age 70, which would mean birthyear: 1800. (I tend to believe the earlier Census and the tombstone dates!-Sherry S. Finchum)
In the Sevier Co., TN Vital Statistics their son William lists his parents birthplace as NC. He does list his father as John INGLE and his mother is listed as unknown. Caraline INGLE Hodges lists her father as John INGLE born in NC and her mother not given.
The 1880 Sevier County census listed William and Jane and their children Sarah -15, John -14, Celia 12, Nancy -10, Henry -10, Kyley -6, Martha -4, and Oliver -5/12.
John -85 and Celia -68 (who had cancer) had Sarah -43 living with them. John was only two houses away from William. On this census John lists his birthplace as TN and his parents both as Virginia. Celia and her parents were listed as being born in South Carolina. Sarah was also listed as being born in SC.

William 44, Jane 35, Sarah 15, John 14, Celia 12, Nancy 10, Henry 8, Kyley 6, Martha 4, Oliver 5/12 (441)His dates are from his tombstone in Zion Hill Cemetery. The tombstone was evidently erected at his death several years after Celia had died because her date of death is listed on tombstone as 1879, but she was still alive in the 1880 Sevier Co., TN Census.
I have received a note from Linda Ingle Stewart of her great-grandfather: John Franklin INGLE from Sevierville, TN who migrated with his wife, Mary Rebecca Monet (MONETT/E) to Parker Co., TX. Still waiting for an answer.
Stew1166@aol.com (2001)
Her tombstone lists the year of death as 1879, as well as in William INGLE's Bible, but John's death is listed first (which indicates to me that hers was listed at the same time of John's death), but she is still alive on 4 Jun 1880 when the Census of District 10 was taken in Sevier Co., TN.
She is listed in 1880 as Celia, age 68 b in SC. In 1870 Sevier Co., TN Census she is listed as Clia, age 70 b in SC. In 1860 Sevier Co., TN she is listed as Caroline age 43, b NC, and in Cocke Co., TN Census of 1850 she is listed as Celia age 29, b SC, 1840: 1 female 20-30 born 1810-1820 (Celia herself)
Her name changes from Census to Census. Sometimes she is listed as Clia, Caroline, and Celia. I do believe that it is the same wife of John each time. The dates are not quite consistent, but...She is listed as Selia on her tombstone in Zion Hill Cemetery.
She is listed in the 1880 Sevier Co., TN Census as having Cancer.
According to family legend, John married an Indian girl who had been abandoned and lived with them. (Marguerite Joyce Perdue Brown states that her mother and grandmother, Zora, told her of the Cherokee line being through her great, great grandfather.)
I wonder is she is related to the MATHES family who are neighbors in Cocke Co., TN in 1850. They were also born in SC-but I cannot find the MATHES/MATHIS family listed there in SC:

52. TEAGUE
The TEAGUE family is supposedly of Celtic Origin and lived in England, Scotland, and Ireland for many centuries. Some of their descendants still live there. The Teague Coat of Arms was granted by the King of England probably 1200-1250 A.D.
The Teague family migrated from England to Fredrick Co., VA about 1720-1728.
They moved from Virginia to Orange Co., NC about 1740-1750. From there, they spread to other parts of NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, TN, MO, TX, CA, and other parts of the United States.
There is one line that is suspect to connect to William b abt 1789>Walter TEAGUE b 1813 m Susannah>Henry Harrison TEAGUE b 1841, Lovena TEAGUE b 1846, John L. TEAGUE b 1850, Marsetta TEAGUE b 1853, James H. TEAGUE b 1858, Marion Charles TEAGUE b 1864. A descendant of this line is Ella Jo KELLER e-mail: ejkeller@mindspring.com

The first seven children mentioned below were born in Rowan County, NC and the last three were born in Laurens County, SC. There were approximately five other children of this union who died in childood but their names, dates of birth and place of burial are not known to us. Joshua's wife Dorothy was not mentioned in his Will and this is evidence that she had passed away sometime before the date shown on his last will and testament. The exact date of Joshua's death is not known, nor his place of burial.
1) Elijah Teague born January 1759 Elijah Teague left a will in Laurens County, SC dated Oct 2, 1824. This was proven in the Court of Ordinary on April 18, 1825. In this will the following children were mentioned: Elizabeth Hipps, Sarah McAdams, Mary Wilson, Catherine McAdams, Rebekah Teague, Robert Teague, Abner Teague, and the heirs of his son Joshua Teague, deceased. Israel Teague born June, 1760 Sold the land that was deeded to him in the Will to Elijah Teague, Jr. on April 24, and moved to another state.
2) William Teague born November 23, 1763, died September 23, 1845 Moved to Wilson County, Tennessee in 1806 with his wife Elizabeth Miller and children.
3) Abner Teague born November 12, 1763, died January 7, 1842 Died in Laurens County leaving a will dated Jan 7, 1842 that mentioned the following children: Thomas, Elijah, Jesse and the widow and children of his deceased son Joshua Teague, and Emily, the wife of Godfrey.
4) Isabella Teague born March 1766, married David Mason
5) James Teague born about 1768 Died in Newberry County, SC, leaving a will dated Jan 20, 1816, mentioning wife Elizabeth (Williams), daughter Dorothy G. Davis, son John (Williams) Teague, son William J. Teague, and daughter Ann M. Teague.
6) Sarah Teague born about 1770, married Wm Gray
7) Sophia Teague born about 1774, married Mr. Lyon
8) Mary Teague born about 1776, married McAdams
9) Susannah Teague born about 1778, married Major EppsA continuing part of "The Beginning of the Teague Families in the South," in Volume 1, No 2 of "The Teague Family Magazine"
Joshua Teague was born in Cecil County, Md. about the year 1732, a son of William Teague and his wife Isabella, and a grandson of Edward Teague and his wife Susan. He moved with his family to Frederick County, VA in 1737-38 and on to North Carolina in 1751, settling on a grant of land obtained from the Earl of Granville on May 1, 1759. This land was situated on Abbots Creek in Rowan County. On March 4, 1762 he purchased 430 acres of land on Abbotts Creek from his brother Moses Teague. In July, 1762 he purchased 430 acres of land on Abbotts Creek from his brother Moses Teague. In July, 1762 he took Title to 310 acres of land on the Cataba River that was given to him by his father and sold this land to George Clayton on April 10, 1764. On Sept. 15, 1765, he and his wife Dorothy sold 120 acres of the Abbotts
Creek property to Felix Metsinger, and on April 13, 1770 they sold the 310 acres on Abbotts Creek to James Welborn.Joshua Teague must have been quite involved in the "Regulator Movement" in North Carolina, as evidenced in the Proclamation dated June 11, 1771, which reads as follows: (From the Colonial Records of North Carolina - Vol. 8) A PROCLAMATION: Whereas I have been informed that many persons who have been concerned in the late Rebellion are desirous of submitting themselves to the Government, I do therefore give notice that every person who will come in either to mine or General Waddell's camp, lay down their arms and take the oath of Allegiance and promise to pay all taxes that are now due or may hereafter become due by them respectively, and submit to the law of this Country, shall have his Majesty's gracious and free pardon for all Treasons, Insurrections and Rebellings done or committed, on or before the 16th of May last, provided they ake their submission aforesaid on our before the tenth of July next. The following persons are however excluded from the benefits of this Proclamation, viz, all the outlaws, the prisoners, all those concerned in the blowing up of General Waddell's ammunition in Mecklenburg County, and the undernamed person, to wit:
Samuel Jones Joshua Teague Samuel Waggoner
Simon Dunn, Jr. Abraham Greson Benjamin Merrill
James Wilkerson Edward Smith John Bumpas
Joseph Boring William Rankin William Robeson
John Winkler John Wilcox Jacob Felton
Tomas Persons
Given under my hand and the Great Seal of the Provice, this 11th day of June, A. Dom. 1771
Wm. Tryon
God Save the KingIt will be noted from the contents of this Proclamation, that the so-called "outlaws," with the exception of Joshua Teague and 15 others, were to be given until the 1st of July, 1771 to submit "to the law of this Country," however on June 19, 1771, on a shady knoll just east of the historic town of Hillsborough, NC, six men called "Regulators" were executed.
Today a bronze plaque commemmorates this small plot of ground with this inscription:
On this spot were hanged By order of a Tory Court June 19, 1771, Merrill, Messer, Matter, Pugh and two other Regulators.Joshua Teague was not an "outlaw" within the meaning of Governor Tryon's Proclamation. Instead, he was a Revolutionary War Patriot who almost gave his life to the cause of American Independence. He has forseen the coming of the above events and found it necessary to seek the safety of new territory to the south. Accordingly he moved into South Carolina several months prior to the above executions and purhased two hundred acres of land in Craven County, SC on Jan 29, 1771, situated on the Bush River. On Dec 11, 1773 he purchased three hundred acres on the Little River in the same county. On July 10, 1791, he purchased 250 acres on Bush Creek in Laurens County SC and it was on this land that he died, leaving a will dated May 12, 1804, naming ten of his children. This will was proven May 2, 1808, which means that he must have died sometime between the year 1804 and 1808.

Will of Joshua Teague on File at the South Carolina Archives Department, Volume 1, Book C-1, Pages 92 & 93 dated May 12, 1804]Here is more from the book "Pioneer Settlers of Alexander County, N.C." published in 1953, transcribed by Kevin Price (own notes are indicated with **):
"Edward Teague, along with many others of his fellow settlers, had in 1768 signed a petition to Governor Tryon asking for redress of certain grievances, which led to the Regulators Rebellion in 1771. After the Battle of Alamance many were dissatisified with conditions. Apparently he, with others, chose to move westward across the line of division drawn by Governor Tryon running north and south just west of Statesville, preferring to live with the Indians rather than under the rule of British Governors." William Teague seems to have settled on the east side of Lower Little River about two miles west of Taylorsville. John Teague settled near the east end of Barretts Mountain near Liledoun. There he took up land and built his home, where he reared his large family.
For John Teague all it shows is him being born ~1802. He married Mary Webster - no date given. ** Note, this is John Teague, son of Moses Teague, son of Rev. Edward Teague **
William Teague was born in 1822 according to the book.
** This is most likely William son of John above. Also mentioned is Robert Teague (born ~1804). He was the son of Moses Teague and Katy Payne Teague and Grandson of Pioneer Edward Teague. ** The "Pioneer Edward Teague" to which this book refers is Rev. Edward Teague (b. 1716), and not Edward Teague (1655) of England. (Robert) Married Sarah Price. About 1852 he with his wife and family of seven children left Alexander County going first to Tennessee and later to Missouri settling somewhere in the area of Springfield, Mo. Nice photograph of him also.
"Edward Teague was a leader of men and had marked influence in his community. Perhaps he was best known as a preacher and the organizer of the first Baptist Church in this section of the state, known as the New Meeting House, organized in 1797 and a house of worship was erected at a point now known as the Munday Graveyard in Ellendale Township. Edward Teague became its first pastor, serving the church from 1797 to his death in 1810."
The book speculates that William Teague and his family came to America with a group of Baptists who emigrated to Virginia in the earlier part (** Apparently, a link had not been established from William to Edward Teague of England.) of the Eighteenth Century, coming in part to escape restrictive laws against Baptists and Quakers in England of that time. It goes on to say that Edward Teague (** Rev. Edward - b. 1716) settled just beyond the
west end of Barrets Mountain on Middle Little River, marking out a boundary of land for which he received title by State Grant after independence was won and North Carolina had become a sovereign state. The original tract consisted of 340 acres. Later he entered another tract of100 acres on Middle Little River. The census of 1790 shows Edward Teague of Burke County to have a family consisting of a wife, two sons under sixteen and five daughters,
also two Negro slaves.(from Mildred's research in Maryland:)

Is the evidence fairly conclusive that Edward Teage, Tegg and Teague are one and the same individual? Also, is it documented that Edward had only three children (William, Catherine and Ann)?
(regarding Edward's son William:)
Kevin Price wrote me with this information from the 1953 book "Pioneer Settlers of Alexander County, N.C.":
Rev J.L. Teague gives this account from Sam Teague & Jim Teague, two very old men living in the vicinity of Love's Creek Baptist Church a few miles out of Siler City in the year 1928: "When we were around 10 years old we talked with our grandfather, who was then 90 years old. He told us that his father was one of seven brothers who came directly from England to America and settled in Orange County, North Carolina, and charged us to remember
his words and hand them down to future generations. And the names of these seven brothers were Abraham, Moses, Joshua, Elijah, Isaac, William and Edward, and their father's name was William."Except for the mention of coming "directly from England," this information is consistent with that listed in my database for William Teague (b. ABT 1693), son of Edward Teague (b. ABT 1655).
54. David DICKSON
In later years, the family name began to be spelled DIXON. This was supposedly due to the fact that one of the grandchildren got into trouble with the law and this was the families attempt to disassociate themselves with that label.
David Dickson became the guardian of 3 minor children of John Cutshall, Jr. in 1855.
Records indicate that they were his daughter Rebecca and John's children. Their names were David, William, and Henry. In the same book, there was a 14 year old named George Cutshall, son of Daniel Cutshall and another George Cutshall, son of John Cutshall, Sr. who was under the guardianship of a Ricker. All 4 children were given over to Jacob Harris in 1857. I believe that 1857 must have been when David and Elizabeth moved to Blount County, TN, and must have been required to have an agent residing in Greene County for the guardianship appointment.North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868 Bride: Berty Steelman Groom: David Dickson Bond Date: 27 Dec 1826 County: Surry Record #: 01 061 Bondsman: Knuel Vestal Bond #: 000144172

56. Joseph CLARK
"The following is compiled partly from what has been related to me by my father, Berry William Clark and by others. Some from family records and some from data obtained by others: The Clarks are of Scott descent. The family migrated to England and later to America, first settling in VA, and there migrated to various places in America, mostly to the West. It is believed that they were several and that they well educated. Great Grandfather, Joseph CLARK, settled in South Carolina, in what year is not known probably somewhere around the late seventeen hundreds. The exact date of his birth is not know, but he died in 1853."(Newton Berry Clark Memories in 1958)
Another cousin reports that he was told by Fred Everitt CLARK that the family originally came from PA.
Sarah's birth is recorded as TN, therefore the family was in TN about 1805 0r 1806.
There are 2 sets of twins in this family.

60. John PAINE
Memoirs of Smith Ferguson PAINE: "John Paine, the second son of Robert B. Paine, was my father. He married Mary Bradburn (my mother). Mary Bradburn was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Bradburn. Elizabeth Bradburn's maiden name was Elizabeth Elledge. Thomas and Elizabeth Bradburn lived on and owned property known as Bradburn's Cross roads, and was located three miles west of where Taylorsville now stands.
I suppose that they were married in Virginia as they moved from Virginia to North Carolina.""Father was a medium sized man, rather low of stature, five feet ten or eleven inches, weighing 165 pounds. A divided, or hair lip, otherwise was a very handsome man. He was a blacksmith by trade, and made bells in abundance. He was a very stout and active man, was hard to handle. He was very lively and loved sports and the chase. He was honest and strict in his dealing with men.
He wore a smile rather than a frown. A true friend, one who never forgot a favor, very sympathetic, ordinarily mild and gentle, but when insulted or injured, was revengeful, fearless and determined. Father loved his family and friends with a devotion that unsurpasses. No sacrifice too great or toil too hard for him if necessity demanded it. While working in the shop one day a sliver or scale of hot iron flew in his left eye, causing him to lose it. Some years later he lost the sight of his right eye. He was blind ten years before his death.
He served an enlistment in the War of 1812. He was at Horseshoe. I believe he reached the scene first just as the battle closed. He helped build a fort at that place.
During the winter of 1852, he became very much interested with regard to his future welfare and professed faith in Christ, joined the church and was baptized the first Sunday in May, 1853 by me, S. F. Paine."
War Records File (John Paine W. O. 7480). He volunteered in Burke Co., NC and served from Feb. 1, 1814 to Sept. 4, 1814 as private in Capt. James Martin's Company of NC Militia, against the Creek Indians. He was discharged at Salisbury, NC.
