This family is not proved as the same Edward SORRELL from Surry Co., NC, but highly suspected.
Edward, Sr's. (b 1730 in VA) son, Thomas stated that "his brother Edward (Jr.) removed to the Shallow Ford of the Yadkin in Rowan poor."
Located about 15 miles west of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the Shallow Ford is, as its name implies, a shallow section of the Yadkin River which afforded a safe place for travelers to cross. In 1780 it was in Surry County, NC. Today, its east entrance is in Forsyth county, its west entrance in Yadkin County.
Surry Co., NC was formed from Rowan County in 1771. The 1817 tax list covers Surry Co., and also part of present day Yadkin Co., which was formed from Surry in 1850.
In Claims of British Merchants after the Revolutionary War, dated 14 Sept 1800 and arranged by Counties, abstracted by Ransom McBride, and appearing in the NC Genealogical Society Journal, Volume XI, No 4, pg 251, Edward SORRELL, Sr. is mentioned as owing 38 pounds sterling. The report of William Duffy, Agent, states that "he called on Thomas SORRELL, eldest son of Edward SORRELL, deceased, and learned from him that his father died about the year 1790; that he made no will; and that no administration was had upon the Estate, the children agreeing to divide the property among themselves amicably and thinking their father very little in debt; that no receipts were found among the few papers of his father, nor remembers that he ever heard his father mention this debt; His father at all times was able to pay it, but no application was made by suit or otherwise; Mrs. SORRELL, wife of Thomas, says she remembers to have heard the old man say the HAMILTONs were indebted to him for a hogshead of tobacco.
The children of Edward SORRELL, deceased, are Thomas and William, now living on Crab Tree in Wake and in very good circumstances. Edward (Jr.) removed to the Shallow Ford of the Yadkin in Rowan poor. Betsey intermarried with Francis Barby, since removed to King and Queen County, VA, and Susannah intermarried with Captain Dempsey Blake of Wake, a rich man."
There are Edward, Thomas, and William SORRELL in Wake Co., NC in 1778 Court and Deed records. There are numerous SORRELL in Wake Co., NC.
Rebecca Blackwell's research suggests that his nickname may have been "Ned".

The 1800 Wake Co., NC and 1810 Surry Co., NC Census do not seem to be the same family!

Not listed on the 1817 Surry Co., NC Tax ListThere is an Edward listed in Bertie Co., 1820-but none in 1830, 1840 or 1850. I don't think that this is our Edward!
Because Bedford Co., TN early records were burned, there is no absolute way to tie this family together with Thomas SORREL.
There is an Edward SORRELL listed in Bedford Co., TN in the 1820 Census:, page 66, 020001-01101.

2 persons engaged in commerce. If my Thomas b 1793 in NC (according to the 1850 Lincoln Co., TN Census) then he should be 27 years old in 1820, old enough to be married, and not still living with his father! I am still not convinced of the 1793 birthdate because his first child, Elizabeth is not born until 1827. If Thomas did not marry until 1825-26, then he may have been born later than 1793. Thomas' age is based on only 1 census record in 1850.
This Census area is 1/4 mile N of the intersection of Center Church Rd. to 231 still in Bedford Co., TN. About 3-4 miles S of Shelbyville on the (Jordan C. Holt and William Dickson and Mary Freeman who were all on E side of the road-as they were listed beside Edward's household). Tim and Helen Marsh have looked for church records from the old Center Church congregation, but none have been located.
The ages are not exactly correct, but the family group is the same as the group above minus Rhoda. Next door to this Edward is a William DAVIS 2001-1. The children would be correct for he and Rhoda, but Rhoda is not listed here, so don't know.(Rhoda married in Surry Co., NC in 1816).
Edward is the first household enumerated on page 66, the next listing is William DAVIS, three more households, followed by Needham SORRELLS.
It is very interesting to me that Millia could write a beautiful letter, but her brother, Thomas, couldn't even sign his name!
65. Penina
She was supposedly a Cherokee Indian who lived to be 104 years old. (From the notes of Georgia Ann Nichols who was her great-granddaughter.)
There is a Penina SORRELS age 82, b NC in the Bedford Co., TN 1850 Census, living in the household of George and Anna DAVIS. (This Penina is strictly an assumed connection as the possible mother of Anna who may be a connection to our family and is unproven at this time!)
She may have gone to MO with Anna and George.

Also another possible relative--dates just make it hard to pinpoint--is a Malinda RUSSELL to Pinckney BELL marriage 18 Aug 1866 in Obion Co., TN. Elizabeth named her first female child Malinda, making this a very probably relative, but due to dates, probably a niece rather than a sister.
Very likely a Rosey RUSSELL who married a Francis Gideon 30 Dec 1839 in Obion Co., TN is related.(I now believe that this is his widow!)

67. Rosey
Her first name is denoted with an "R" on the gravemarker of her daughter, Margaret Malinda.
Because James Russell died early and while some of his children were still infants and his wife R[---?---] Russell was still a young women, one would expect her to promptly remarry. I believe that that the Rosey Russell who married Francis Gideon in Obion County 30 December 1839 is this woman. She is the right age in the 1840 Census and there are several small children living with them in the 1840 Census(Neety, Nancy, and Sabra). Alsey and J. Martin did not marry until 1841 and 1843 respectively.
She was probably about 18 years old when she married. Her age in 1840 would have been about 42-44 years old.

Dist. 8 is on the lower east side of the county bordered by Dist. 6 & 7 on the north and east and Gibson Co on the South. Kenton would be in this district.
68. Andrew SCOTT
In the court documents of his father, John SCOTT, he died without a will and his children said they would forgo a piece of his estate in deference to their mother, who had to care for a retarded daughter. Andrew signed with wife Caty. (Washington Co., VA)
There is a note in the Lincoln Co., TN Census book that in July 1852 Wm DYER appointed guardian of children of Wilson Scott. Children named as in #4074 LCT Court. These are possibly the grandchildren of this man.
From notes of Mary Scott, he is listed as Andrew or Wilson SCOTT died in 1819 or 1820 in Lincoln Co., TN.
Information on this man and his ancestors came from Rev. LaVerne "Pike" Thomas 522 E. Flournoy Lucas Rd., Shreveport, LA 71115 (318) 798-1887 (1997) e-mail: TXTR76A@prodigy.com (1999)

She is living beside her son Samuel in 1830 & 1850 Census.
She is listed in his household in 1840.

He owned land in Bedford, Lincoln, and Marshall Co., TN.
The cemetery is located 0.2 miles south of Hannah's Gap Baptist Church on Bledsoe Road in the Po Grab Community of Lincoln County, TN. It is on private property back off the main road.
The first 2 children listed are from Internet site by Mike Basham. http://www.chrysalis.org/malcolm These children are also listed in information from Louis A. Shone III, MD. Louis also lists another child: Mary D. who married a KING.
75. Elizabeth Henrietta DAVIDSON
Her name is listed on the Census as Henrietta, and also on her tombstone. She evidently used her middle name. Elizabeth Henrietta is from the records submitted by Mrs. Thomas A. McADAMS. They appear to be from Bible records.
There is an error on the 1850 Lincoln Co., TN Census record which records the wife's name as Margaret age 61 born in NC. The recorder has transcribed the wives of father and son with John McADAMS, Jr. age 23, who is living next door with his wife Henrietta age 18 born in TN.
His son, Thomas W. lists his father's birthplace as KY in the 1880 Census.
Goodspeed Biographies for Marshall Co., TN lists an article that verifies this husband and wife from the "Blue-Grass State". The URL is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnmarshl/goodspeed/gdspdbiosB.html (1999)
He was in Maury Co., TN in Jun 1809 as a Road Commissioner.
"He resided in KY until 1800, then went to Marshall Co., TN. He was a man of remarkable intellectual powers, superior to many of his associates in that particular. He and wife were not professed Christians, but they inclined to the Methodist Episcopal faith. He was an old-line Democrat and died at the age of sixty-two." (Goodspeed)
He is listed in the War of 1812 and was with Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. (Goodspeed History of Central, AR. pg 245)
Information in TN Vol IV Marshall Co., TN Bible Records, Cemetery Records, Will, Land Grants, and Court Records from Genealogical Records, TN Society NSDAR 1978-1979 lists the children of Thomas BRENTS.
There is room in this family line for another family group considering the dates of births of children do not begin until 1810-1815.
Thomas was appointed Road Overseer in Lincoln Co., TN in 1815.
Lincoln Co., TN 1820 Census lists: 459 11 Bents, Thomas 120001/21010
Marshall Co., TN was formed out of Lincoln Co., TN in 1836.
A Thomas Brents head of household appears in 1840 Marshall County census, 000110001-01000001. I suppose the 60-70 year old male could be someone else, but.... Also I do not have a copy, but there was a Thomas Brents will recorded, 1842, as-a-72 (MS).

79. Jane "Jenny" Margurett MCWHORTER
She lived to be fifty-six years old. Some have listed her name as Margurett McQuirter.
They moved to Bedford Co., TN from VA in the 1830's. They lived northwest of Bedford Community, south of the Duck River. 1850 Bedford Co., TN Census. Death date is from Bible records from Victoria Woodard SMITH.

1860 Lincoln Co., TN Census listed beside son Dabney T. with daughters Susan and Christiana.
Her death date is from Bible records from Victoria Woodard SMITH which lists her name as Susan CONNALY.
Family tradition says her maiden name was COLLIER.

The cemetery is beside a house which is across the road from New Bethel Baptist Church (originally MARSH land) at Bedford, west of Shelbyville Highway 64. Buried there under a tree with ornate iron fence are Michael and Eliz Marsh, Caldonia, Geo and Eliz Marsh and her husband Thomas J. Robinson. (Coming from Lewisburg) it is the 5th house on right after the Bedford store. Turn into the driveway. Close to the house there in the trees, are the graves. A memorial marker honoring this pioneer couple stands at the entrance to the church graveyard. Personal visit in 2000 by Sherry S. Finchum (Information from L. Marsh e-mail: LMarsh6405@cs.com) (2000).

John L. Gilbert came from GA, an old Census says. Just across the Savannah River from where the Fosters lived in Abbeyville District. John L. 90. Thomas Henderson GLIDEWELL Sr.
He supposedly served in the Indian Wars that occurred while he was yet a young man living in VA, from which state he came to TN in the early part of the 19th Century (Source: Obituary of his son-William Jackson.)
He was soldier in the War of 1812, being in the battles of Norfolk and Richmond, VA ( Information provided by Mrs. K. Norton Gill, Rt. 2, Box 967, Hayti, MO 63851 from Mrs. Leister E. He was an overseer in NC for some 4 years, moving from there in 1823, settling in Lincoln Co., TN where he bought wild land and soon made himself a home and farm, keeping a country inn.
(Some more research should be done on the time period prior to coming to Lincoln Co., TN-there are no records to record the death of his first wife, and marriage to his 2nd wife in Lincoln Co.,TN).
He was a Tavern Keeper in 1826/27 in Lincoln Co., TN, (TN Vol II, p 204)
"Thomas Glidewell is permitted to keep a tavern in this county at his own house for twelve months, who entered into bond and security, 2nd Jan 1826".

From Bible of William Berry Freeman: Thomas H. Glidewell left the Ridge November 3rd day 1858.
"Thomas H. Glidewell, one of the oldest farmers of Saline Township, was born in North Carolina, in the year 1819, and is the son of Thomas H. and Susan (Allen) Glidewell, natives, respectively, of Virginia and North Carolina, and of Scotch and Welsh origin. Thomas H. Glidewell, Sr., was an overseer in North Carolina for some four years, moving from there in 1823, and settling in Lincoln County, Tenn., where he bought wild land and soon made himself a home and farm, keeping a country inn. Remaining there until 1857, he then moved to Cape Girardeau, Mo., near Jackson. While in Tennessee Mr. Glidewell was captain in the State militia, and was known as Col. Glidewell. After coming to Missouri he engaged in farming for two years, dying in 1861. He was married about 1816 the first time, becoming by this marriage the father of thirteen children, five of whom survive: Thomas H. (our subject), John and Mary (twins, the latter the wife of Mr. Steelman), Drucilla (widow of Abner Freeman), and William J. (who lives in Florida). The mother died about 1834. She was an honored member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Glidewell was married the second time to Agnes Billings, who bore him these children: Atlanta (wife of Isaac Ridicks, who lives in Cape Girardeau County, Mo.), Terry (who lives in Illinois), Babe (in Illinois), and Rufus (in Illinois). Mrs. Glidewell died in 1884. She and her husband were both members of the Baptist Church. John Glidewell served in the War of Independence as a private, and Thomas H. Glidewell was a soldier in the War of 1812, being in the battles of Norfolk and Richmond, Va." Goodspeed's Biographies, 1890, Central AR, Saline Co., Biography of Thomas H. Glidewell, Jr. stated that he had been married four times, page 265-266

92. Berry REES
The information below is listed to assist in determining the ancestry of our REES/E family. It has yet to be determined the actual given name of the man who married and fathered the children of our Sally. We find no record of a Berry REESE anywhere in VA in early records. He very likely could have been killed in the War of 1812. One of the sons of Virginia REES COLLIER, daughter of Robert W. REES was named Berry.
Sally is HOH in the 1820 Bedford Co., VA Census.
I did suspect this man's actual first name to be William (son and three grandsons) and his father's name to be Robert or Slowman because these names are used in the names of sons or grandsons, but if the William in Bedford Co., VA who died in 1810 is a brother, then probably not his name also. The names Jordan and Perry are also grandsons names.
I did find a William REESE who was recorded in the Order Books of Bedford Co., VA. He was sworn for jury duty.
In Book 17, 1815-1820 there is a William REESE, pg 745......
February Court 1820
William Reese being first sworn- came into court and made oath that he entered under Capt. Elias Edmonds (---) & Porterfield regiment in the Virginia line for the term of three years & served four years & four months & received an honorable discharge from Major Mazzaro which discharge was destroyed by water-before he reached home-and that his indigent circumstances requires the assistance of his country for support. Jacob White sworn, says that the said William Reese is in very indigent circumstances & needs the assistance of his country for support. The Bedford County, VA History Book lists a William REESE on the Militia roll during the Revolution. (Perhaps the William who married Milly SWAIN.)The 1810 Census has a William REESE, pg 478 with himself as Male age 26-45, 2 females under 10 and 1 female age 26-45(assumed his wife) [This is probably the William REESE who married Milly Swain in Bedford Co., VA: William REESE and Milly SWAIN, 31 Aug 1801, surety, Chas. Swain]. He is too young to have done the Revolution! Too old for our William Gibbs. The William REESE from Franklin Co., VA who died in 1810 (father of William Washington, John, etc.) was already dead, and his wife Mary is listed on page 480 of the 1810 Census.
There are 3 Williams in Dinwiddie Co., VA in the tax records 1782.
Wm REES 1 free male, 0 Negros, 1 Negro under age, 0 horses, and 2 cattle.
William REES 1 free male, 2 Negros, 1 Negro under age, 6 horses, 20 cattle.
William REES 1 free male, 0 Negros, 1 Negro under age, 1 horse, 0 cattle. There are 2 Williams in Dinwiddie Co., VA in the tax records of 1787, listed as Jr. and Sr. [This Jr. & Sr. does not denote relation, only 1 the older!]
The Bedford Co. Order Books list a William in 2 separate jury lists in May 1786. There are 2 William REESE on the list of taxpayers for Bedford Co., VA in 1809. (William who married Milly, and the William who died in 1810?)
The William REESE from Franklin Co., VA (father of William Washington REESE, did not buy land in Bedford Co., VA until 1806, with the 1818 tax list listing his estate).
The names Roger, William, and Richard appear first in Dinwiddie and were probably brothers or father/sons. The names Hugh, Isham, and Jordan appear early and are there at least through 1800.
Lunenburg County in 1748, 1749, 1750 and 1751 embraced an area now in 11 counties which are: Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Charlotte, Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Patrick, Franklin, Campbell, Bedford, and Appomattox.
1782 Dinwiddie Co., VA formed from Prince George County in 1752 lists: Jordan, Josiah, Francis, William, William, James, Amey, Isham, Edward, Wm., and Frederick REES.
In the records of 1787 VA there are numerous names in the Tax Records with the spellings: REECE, REES, and REESE.
1787 Dinwiddie Co., VA lists: Frederick; Edward; William, Jr; Jordan; Isham; Amey; Jesse; William, Sr; Capt. Hugh; Francis; Henry; and Herod REESE.

The biographical sketch of John M. Stone begins on pg. 27 and gives this information within the article. John M. Stone is the son of Mildred REESE (daughter of Robert W. REESE and Nancy MINOR) and James A. Stone (son of Moses STONE and Margaret WILLIAMS. [Understanding that Mildred was alive when this article was written, and the fact that she was an adult before her grandmother Sarah "Sally" died in 1854, I believe that she should have known the name of Sally's husband who died just prior to Mildred's birth!-Sherry S. Finchum.] One of the sons of Virginia REES COLLIER, daughter of Robert W. REES was named Berry.
Howard County, AR Heritage 1988 from the Howard County Heritage Club pg. 380 (William Gibbs and Katherine REESE) "The REESE family originally came from Wales. Two REESE brothers emigrated from Wales to Virginia via Ireland. Later two brothers, descendants of the original family, immigrated to TN about 1830. It is unknown whether they went to Bedford Co., TN at the same time, but it is known that William Gibbs (1792-185?) came to AR about 20 years before John R. arrived.
Perhaps the 2 original brothers were Slowman and Matthias REES!

1830 Bedford Co., VA Census lists: David B. #152, Featherstone #146, James R.#132, Joseph T. #146, Sally #163, and William #139.
REECE, William twp - Bethel, Bedford Co., VASally's household lists: 1 white male under 5 years, 1 between 20 - 30 years (probably Wilkerson), and 1 white female under 5 years, 1 between 20 - 30 (probably Parthenia) years and 1 between 60-70 years. No slaves or free colored persons listed.
1830 Lincoln Co., TN Census lists REESE:
Jacob #212 with Males 1 under 5, 1 30-40 and Females 1 under 5 and 1 20-30.
John #212, with Males 1 10-15, 2 20-30, and 1 50-60 and Females 1 10-15 and 1 50-60.
Littleberry #201 with Males 1 20-30 and Females 1 20-30.
Polly #207 with 1 Male 5-10 1 10-15 and Females 1 50-60.
1840 Bedford Co., VA Census lists: David B. #302 Northern, Joseph T. #302, Northern, and William W. #264, Southern.
1840 Lincoln Co., TN Census lists Sarah REESE household with 1 male under 5, 1 male 30-40 (probably Wilkerson), 1 female 30-40 (probably Parthenia), 1 female 70-80.
1850 Lincoln Co., TN Census lists Parthenia REESE as head of household age 85 with Sarah listed as male age 14. Both listed as being born in VA. I believe that the names have been transcribed, and it should be Sarah age 85 and Parthenia as younger. With the listing of Sarah as male, obviously there can be mistakes! Other children listed in the household are: Callowhill age 7 b TN and Martin V. age 40 b in TN.
The cemetery record lists her age as 89 which would agree with the age of 85 in the 1850 Lincoln Co., TN Census.
Later in the 1860 Lincoln Co., TN Census Parthenia is listed as age 56, with no Sarah, and Calahill age 24 and Vanbuness age 16. Still living beside Wilkerson W. REESE.
The children of Sally REESE receive land from Littleberry LEFTWICH in his will that includes her heirs dated 30 May 1823 and rec 23 Jun 1823 (Will Book 5, pg 419 Bedford Co., VA) I have thoroughly researched the LEFTWICH line, and find no connection to our Sally. Perhaps she was a sister to one of Littleberry LEFTWICH's wives probably Frances HOPKINS considering the dates, or her husband Berry was a relative of Littleberry LEFTWICH.
Deed Book 22, pg 368 14 May 1831 lists Sally and all the children's names as they are selling the land that they were given in the will of Littleberry LEFTWICH. I have yet to prove any connection of Sally to Littleberry or his family. It lists the men's (her sons) names and the first names of the men's wives. Wilkerson, Parthenia and Flemin are listed alone. Parthenia is listed as head of household in the 1850 Census of Lincoln Co., TN with some children, perhaps nieces and nephews. It does list that the children were born in TN.
Some additional research must be done on the daughters (Ann, Martha, and Nancy) who did not appear to move to Lincoln County, TN as the sons did. Perhaps they stayed in Bedford Co., VA and there may be a link to their father is some document there.
The land for the old cemetery at Mt. Hermon (where Sally is buried) was sold by Abner FREEMAN of Lincoln Co., TN. According to early deeds, this appears to be a part of the old Higginbotham tract purchased by William Higginbotham in 1810 and 1811. On October 15, 1830, one acre of land was deeded to Isaac Bennett, Peterson Grammar, and Henry Dean and their successors in office as trustees of the Meeting House at Mt. Hermon. Included in this transaction was the meeting house and all improvements thereon. Witnesses were William C. FREEMAN and James FREEMAN.
100. INGLE
Origin of the surname Ingle most of this is related to Anglo-Saxon origins, although we do know that "ingles" is Spanish for English, and of course, "engel" in German, means "Angel". The Scots word "ingle" means "fireplace" or "fireside", as in "inglenook" a sitting area near the fire, and represents a location. The Saxon word "ingle" means beacon or fire. The Ingles in NC may have been related to Paulser/Polser Ingle/Engel -- said to have been of Hessian or German descent, arriving in Am. before the Am Rev. He had a brother Jacob, who was found on the 1800 census in SC in the same area. BUT, the data below is related to the English connection.
The earliest record found of the Ingle surname in America, is that of Richard Ingle (The Pirate) of Maryland. He was said to have been born in 1609 in England. THE SCOTCH-IRISH OR THE SCOT IN NORTH BRITAIN, NORTH IRELAND, AND NORTH AMERICA CHAPTER XVII THE NORSE AND GALLOWAY (page 251) The other special name is Engleston or Ingleston, which we mentioned at p. 87. In regard to it there are at least two opinions, one being that it is derived from "English," and another from the Scottish "ingle," a chimney, or rather fireplace. There are several farms bearing the name in Galloway, and one so called in West Lothian. In a charter granted by King David II., page 252 [p.252] lands so called have it spelled Inglynstoun, and in another charter by Robert II., it is Inglystoun (Robertson's Index of Charters). Pont, in his map drafted between 1608-20, spells it "Englishtoun," which cannot be accepted, for it is obviously incorrect. The surname of Inglis found in Scotland is the root of this error, as the assumption has been that it is a corruption of "English"; but opposed to this idea is the fact that although several individuals named Inglis are to be found in the possession of lands at an early period, not one of them is styled of Ingliston or Inglystoun. The Inglises of Manner seem to have been the chief family, and they held the lands of Branksome or Branksholm, afterwards possessed by the Scotts (Buccleuch). The Ingliston in West Lothian probably got the name from Inglis of Cra-mond, the first of which family was a merchant in Edinburgh about 1560, the Reformation time. It has also been overlooked that "English" is a distract English surname borne by families in England, and any affinity with it and Inglis has no other basis than some similarity in sound. We still adhere to the same .opinion as given by us in Lands and their Owners in Galloway, that the farms in Galloway called Engleston or Ingleston have nothing to do with the surname Inglis, or as Englishtoun; but were given from the nature or character of the land, and are from the Norse engi for meadow-land, or a meadow, which is also found in Anglo-Saxon as ing or inge, a pasture, a meadow.
A Topographical Dictionary of England: Volume 2 E.
Preface page 136 ENGLEFIELD, a parish in the hundred of THEALE, county of BERKS, 6 miles (W.) from Reading, containing 343 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Berks, and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £11. 12. 8½, and in the patronage of R. P. W. Benyon de Beauvoir, Esq. The church has some portions in the early English style, but has been much modernised: it contains several interesting monuments to the memory of the ancestors of the Marquis of Winchester. This parish, which is not unfrequently called Inglefield, derives its name from the Saxon word Ingle, a fire or beacon light, and probably had its origin about the middle of the ninth century, at which time the Danes, having made themselves masters of Reading, sent out a detachment from their army to attack the Saxons, who were encamped at this place, and who drove them back with great loss. Elias Ashmole, the herald and antiquary, retired to this place in 1647, where he pursued his researches. There were Henry and William who arrived in MD in 1673.

The English People Found a Nation in America Chapter 10 Colonization of Maryland In this state of uncertainty, Leonard Calvert, the proprietary's deputy, repaired to England to take counsel with his brother. During his absence, and toward the end of the year 1643, a London ship, commissioned by parliament, anchored in the harbor of St. Mary's; and Brent, the acting governor, under a general authority from the king at Oxford, but with an indiscretion which was in contrast with the caution of the proprietary, seized the ship, and tendered to its crew an oath against the parliament. Richard Ingle, the commander, having escaped, in January, 1644, was summoned by proclamation to yield himself up, while witnesses were sought after to convict him of treason. The new commission to Governor Calvert plainly conceded to the representatives of the province the right of originating laws. It no longer required an oath of allegiance to the king, but it exacted from every grantee of land an oath of fidelity to the proprietary. This last measure proved a new entanglement. In September, Calvert returned to St. Mary's to find the colony rent by factions, and Clayborne still restless in asserting his claim to Kent island. Escaping by way of Jamestown to London, Ingle had obtained there a letter of marque, and, without any other authority, reappearing in Maryland, he raised the standard of parliament against the established authorities, made away with the records and the great seal, and, by the aid of Protestants, compelled the governor and secretary, with a few of their devoted friends, to fly to Virginia. Father White and the other Jesuit missionaries were seized and shipped to England; an oath of submission was tendered to the inhabitants, but it was not subscribed by even one Catholic. After his lawless proceedings, which wrought for the colony nothing but confusion and waste of property and insurrectionary misrule, Ingle returned to England.Fairfax and Jost Hite Land Surveys, Shenandoah River, 1734-1735, Frederick Co., VA:

Image: 27"Paulser INGLE and George INGLE were in NC found on Gun Powder Creek, Burke Co., NC 1778. Paulser b circa 1737, who was a Rev War Soldier, enlisting from NC, Gun Powder Creek, Lower Creek Area, Burke County, NC on 23 Jun 1780 and George b circa 1735 who has a better recorded record. His descendant is CEO, and President of Ingle Markets of Black Mt., NC, both men, claim Germany as country of origin. There were known 4 different Ingle men in the Rev War.
My gg grandfather,Paulser Ingle, found on Gun Powder Creek, Burke Co, NC Fall 1778. He "inlisted" (sic) in First Division, NC Continental Forces (Militia) on 23 Jun 1780, under Col. Clark. George Ingle, be 1735, Germany, m. Ann Margaret Clapp, 1753, Naturalized 1763, Guilford Co, NC, d 1799, same place. He was, also, in the Rev War. John, an officer, in the Rev War, The North Carolina Line, received 3840 Acres of land north of Nashville, in 1787. William Ingle is documented in the Applications for Pensions in TN, by Lonzo Ingle, his grandson. All of these Ingle men came from Germany and had large families.
George & Paulser replicated some children's names, lived relatively closely in the wilderness of NC. I have much info on Paulser and George. John Ingle, the Commissioned Officer, in the NC Line, is little known to me. If I recall, he was taken prisoner but either paroled or escaped, and returned to duty. I had a call from CA last evening about him but received nothing more than info on his land grant, mentioned above. George Ingle had a large family, but your John could not have been his child, but, possibly a grandchild. Nor could he have been the son of Paulser, unless a "yard 'youngun" as Paulser Ingle's wife died after 1805 (the last known record of her in Land Lottery, Franklin Co, GA).
Since we know that Paulser Ingle and George Ingle were here at such an early date, and your John Ingle was b. 1812, and Paulser's family were living in the Mulberry Creek area of Lincoln, Moore, Bedford Counties around Fayetteville, TN, it is unlikely that your John belonged to Paulser.Paulser's John m. Nancy Smith in SC, and moved on into Bedford County with the Smith family in c. 1814.
I believe that you have the possibility of descending from George Ingle &Ann Margaret Clapp, as they had a large family, and lived East of the locations of your John." (fhlawson@hiwaay.net)
John Ingle (1788–1874) immigrated from Somersham, England, to America in 1818. He settled near Saundersville (now Inglefield) in Vanderburgh County where he farmed and served as the town's postmaster from 1823–69.
Sources: A Guide to Manuscripts of the Indiana Historical Society and Indiana State Library, Indianapolis: Indiana Historical Society. p. 100. General and Reference Collection Z1281 .P85 1986.
The collection consists primarily of correspondence of Ingle and his wife, Martha, with their family in England, 1813–69. The letters discuss a variety of subjects including the differences between life in America and England, the development of Southern Indiana, conditions in England, the family business, and economic, religious, and political matters. Also included is John Ingle's description of his trip from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Indiana, and his visit to Morris Birbeck's Illinois settlement in 1818. There also are letters from the Ingles' son, John, Jr., to his English relatives, 1834–37. (www.indianahistory.org <http://www.indianahistory.org/>)1800 INGLE

The migration of European settlers from Virginia and Pennsylvania into Union County as early as 1751 was encouraged by the availability of free frontier land.
This migration was accelerated by the Treaty of 1755 between South Carolina Governor James Glen and Old Hopp (the principal Cherokee chief), which ceded the land to the South Carolina province. The Cherokees made raids on Union and other frontier settlements until they were defeated in the Cherokee War, which ended in 1761.
During the early years, Union County's economy revolved around subsistence agriculture. However, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1793 -- and by 1800, cotton had begun to penetrate Union County, ultimately leading to increased demand for slaves. During the first decade of the 1800s, many Quakers and others left Union County because they objected to the rapid growth of plantation slavery.
Meanwhile, by the 1820s and 1830s, soil exhaustion began causing a mass emigration of Union County's poorer White population to new lands further south and west -- from Georgia to Texas. Some of the emigrants took their slaves with them.
There are no INGLEs in the earlier Union Co., SC Census or in the later 1850 Census.

Hi Joe,Thanks for writing to me Joe...the parent's of this William Ricker that married Ursula Shelton isn't known...I feel sure that he is related to my *Peter Ricker...maybe a grandson, but which son isn't known...Peter and Peggy had a son named William Ricker that I used to think was this William that married Ursula Shelton...but, Peter and Peggy's son was killed in New Orleans during the War of 1812.Here is what Rich Nallenweg wrote about this William Ricker...and also our cousin, Raylene Cheatham.I copied something from the Tennessee Archives in Nashville that concerned William Ricker. His property was evidently inherited by his brothers and sisters. They were selling 160 acres of land in the Arkansas Territory to John Dickson the 18th of September, 1826. The deed of conveyance was from Jacob Ricker, George Ricker, Frederick Ricker, Martin Ricker, John Ricker, Joshua Willet and Rachel (his wife), Philip Smithers and Ephs (his wife),Solomon Fann and Polly (his wife), Michael Crum and Hulda (his wife). Philip Evert and Peggy (his wife), heirs at law of William Ricker Decd. This property was in the northwest 1/4 of section 35 of township seven north in range 13 west and founded on warrant 25.886.At least this information gives a record of who the Ricker sisters were married to. Its too bad the wives of the Ricker brothers were not mentioned.

"The first schools in Greeneville, as now remembered, were taught in a log house standing near where Rhea Academy is, and in the Presbyterian Church. The latter was a boy's school, and was taught for four or five years by Joseph Brown. The former was doubtless the original Rhea Academy, and was opened about 1812. The lot was donated by John Rhea in 1811, and it is said that he also furnished a large part of the funds for the erection of the building. The present academy was built about 1825, and about 1840 the building for the female department was erected upon the lot given by John Dickson.About 1843 an Episcopal Church was organized and a house of worship erected. Among the first members were Gen. T. D. Arnold and wife, Mordecai Lincoln and wife, Mrs. John Dickson, Mrs. Matilda Martin, Mrs. Catherine Williams, Miss Mary Lincoln and Loyd Tillman. The first minister was Dr. McCabe, his successors were Dr. Goode, A. M. Royce and W. W. Cahagan. The congregation was never a large one and, owing to deaths and removals, it has been still further decreased, and for several years no regular services have been held."
